Sister Stories

Sister Stephanie Still
Vocation Director, Communicator | San Francisco, California

When did you hear God's call and how have you responded?
I believe I heard the call of God at an early age – as a child I felt close to God and grateful for God’s presence in my life. As a child, teenager, and young adult, my response was to participate in the Church and to live a good life. I began to hear my more specific call to religious life in my early and mid twenties. I entered the Sisters of the Presentation when I was twenty eight years old. Even though I had been around women religious all my life – teachers in elementary and high schools, family friends – I still wasn’t too sure of what being a Sister meant. I entered with trust, willingness to be open, wanting to be of service, as well as natural fears and anxiety. What I never questioned was the call and here I am nearly thirty years later! How has living as a Presentation Sister enhanced your life?
Living as a Presentation Sister enhanced and continues to enhance my life in many ways. I am very grateful for the opportunities, experiences, and challenges that have come my way during my religious life. I have met people, traveled, and had other experiences that I don’t think I would have had as a single or married woman.
Most importantly to me, has been the depth of understanding and experience in my spiritual growth and relationship with God. My early experiences with God have been deepened and magnified. What would you share with women considering religious life?
If you are thinking about religious life or are feeling a call, pursue it! I have talked with many women as Vocation Director, who felt they were called but never did anything about it and regretted that lack of action profoundly. Discerning a religious vocation is a process that will help a woman learn much about herself and whether or not she decides to enter religious life, the process is very beneficial and enlivening. Anything else you'd like to share?
Women religious have contributed in so many ways to our local areas, our nation, our world, and our Church. I see that continuing into the future because I believe the Holy Spirit will continue to call women forth into vowed life.
