Sister Stories

Sister Carla Popes
Director of Vocations | Dubuque, Iowa

When did you hear God’s Call and how have your responded? I grew up in an ordinary family in rural Iowa. Faith was important and was lived in everyday practical ways as the fields were prepared, planted and harvested, as the family shared morning and evening prayer and as we thanked God for the food we enjoyed at meals together. Another way God spoke to me was through a sister who asked me the following question, “What are you going to do when you grow up?” Throughout my growing up years the influence of my family and sister’s question planted seeds of possibility within me. How has living as a Presentation Sister enhanced my life? Living as a Presentation Sister has been an enriching and challenging experience. I appreciate being part of a community that shares common values and the desire to make a difference in the world. In community, the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience unite us in faith for our shared faith-journey. Our charism of hospitality forms and informs our being and doing. As women of prayer and service what we accomplish together is so much more than what we do by ourselves. What would you share with women considering religious life? Together in community, women religious deepen their relationships with God, others and the world. Are you longing for meaning and purpose in your life? Pray about this longing, get to know several religious communities and listen with your heart. After visiting a religious community, ask yourself if you feel at home with the group.
Anything else you’d like to share? As a sister I have experienced great joy, deep meaning, and life-giving relationships living in community and working in a variety of ministries with and for the People of God. I have been blessed in more ways than I can count.
